Road Rash and six other games received anniversary restorations. Here’s what changed, what the other ports offer and how to check your Australian store.

The 1996 Windows version of Road Rash has received its first digital release. It’s one of seven anniversary restorations in EA’s 5 November reissue of 25 PC games. The other 18 are ports. If you want to replay Theme Hospital or the Ultima games, look for those individual editions in the catalogue.

What changed in Road Rash?

EA lists a relicensed soundtrack, restored full-motion video from the original tapes, optional upscaled video, windowed mode, controller support and racing up to 60 FPS. The music can now play during races. Steam and GOG list Windows versions. Check the store’s controller notes for your device, since support varies by controller and storefront.

Which games received anniversary restorations?

Alongside Road Rash, EA lists the first four numbered Wing Commander games, Wing Commander Prophecy and Privateer 2: The Darkening. The changes differ by game. EA says Prophecy incorporates a community enhancement patch and restored video. Read the individual edition before assuming a feature applies across the set.

What should existing owners check?

EA says qualifying digital Wing Commander owners on GOG or the EA app receive the corresponding Anniversary Edition upgrade on their existing storefront. Check your library first. The announcement doesn’t establish a cross-store Steam entitlement.

Australian price and store choice

Steam’s Australian listing data showed A$7.47 for Road Rash on 8 November AEST, down from A$14.95. The listing shows an offer through 19 November. Check the final Australian checkout price and deadline before buying. GOG lists a DRM-free Windows edition with an offline installer and optional GOG Galaxy. Its page lists single-player, while Steam also lists LAN PvP. Compare the specific edition if multiplayer matters to you.

Why the tapes matter

EA says it found the source masters in its physical archive in 2022. Using those tapes can recover details lost in the compressed video shipped with the original games. The preservation work also illustrates why storing original production materials matters long after a game leaves retail.
