Zelda turns 40: Ocarina of Time returns on Switch 2, with much more planned
Nintendo's anniversary plans connect the 1986 original, a rebuilt N64 classic and a live-action film.
Four decades after the original The Legend of Zelda arrived in Japan in 1986, Nintendo is celebrating with something more substantial than a birthday graphic. Its September anniversary presentation announced a rebuilt version of Ocarina of Time for Nintendo Switch 2 on 5 November 2026.
A 1998 classic gets a new presentation
Nintendo describes overhauled visuals, newly voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, orchestral music and reworked movement and camera controls. That makes this a new interpretation of the Nintendo 64 adventure, not merely a higher-resolution copy of the old cartridge.
Games, hardware and film
The anniversary also includes special-edition Switch 2 hardware and accessories, an official concert series and collaborations. Nintendo's Australian anniversary hub lists the special-edition console as available on 29 October. The official Zelda live-action film is scheduled for cinemas worldwide on 30 April 2027.
Why the legacy matters
From exploratory 1980s adventures to landmark 3D worlds and modern open-ended play, Zelda is a rare series whose older games are still part of the conversation. The anniversary is a chance to revisit what each era actually changed rather than reducing forty years to nostalgia.
