Before you buy: accessibility settings worth checking in a game
Subtitles, remapping, motion controls and readable interfaces are practical buying criteria, not optional extras.
A game can look spectacular in a trailer and still be tiring, uncomfortable or inaccessible to play. The most useful pre-purchase research is about the settings that affect your particular needs, on your particular platform.
Start with the things you use every minute
Look for remappable actions, hold-versus-toggle options, subtitle size and background opacity, text scaling, camera shake controls, contrast, colour-independent cues and difficulty adjustments. None is universally required by every person; a game may work brilliantly for one player and poorly for another.
Read platform listings carefully
PlayStation's Accessibility Tags let participating publishers describe supported features. Their presence helps discovery, but a tag is a publisher-provided description — not a hands-on guarantee of quality or implementation. Microsoft publishes Xbox Accessibility Guidelines addressing text, input, communication and screen narration, but guidelines alone are not proof that any given game meets them.
Check the version, not just the game name
Accessibility support can vary between console editions, PC storefronts and game updates. If a review demonstrates subtitles on one system, do not assume identical menu sizing elsewhere. Search for footage or detailed reports from the version you intend to buy.
Make your own short checklist
- Can I read the smallest important text at my normal screen distance?
- Can I remap actions or reduce repeated button holds?
- Can I reduce flashing, motion, camera shake and sudden audio peaks if needed?
- Does the game explain objectives without relying on one colour or sound?
- Can I pause, retry, save or adjust challenge when I need to?
If those answers are unknown, that uncertainty belongs in the purchasing decision. No review score replaces the controls you actually need.
