Cyberpunk 2077 in 2026: a spoiler-light guide to starting over

Lifepath, attributes, cyberware and when to start Phantom Liberty. A practical reset for the version of Night City that exists now.

Cyberpunk 2077 is a different game from the one that launched in 2020. The 2.0 update rebuilt perks, cyberware and police behaviour, and Phantom Liberty added a district, a spy story and a new ending path. If you are returning after years away, the character you remember may not be the character the current systems support.

This is a restart guide, not a build guide. It covers the decisions that are expensive to undo and the order that keeps the story coherent.

Pick a lifepath for flavour, not power

Nomad, Streetkid and Corpo change the opening hours and add dialogue options tied to your background. They do not lock you out of the main story, and none of them is a difficulty setting. Choose the one whose opening you want to play; the mechanical differences are small compared with your attribute and perk choices.

Attributes are the real commitment

You have five attributes: Body, Reflexes, Technical Ability, Intelligence and Cool. They gate perks, cyberware and dialogue checks, and they are expensive to raise later. Decide what kind of character you are playing before you spend points.

A useful rule is to pick two attributes to raise high and treat the rest as support. A character who is merely good at everything will struggle with the checks that matter, because the game rewards specialisation more than balance.

Perks changed, so old guides are wrong

The 2.0 perk trees are smaller and more consequential than the original release. Many perks now change how a mechanic works rather than adding a percentage. Read the tree before spending points, and respec if the character is not fun; the game allows a one-time attribute reset, so use it deliberately rather than as a panic button.

Cyberware is a build, not shopping

Cyberware capacity limits how much you can install, and the limit grows with progression and upgrades. That makes the ripperdoc a build decision: armour, mobility, hacking and combat implants compete for the same budget. Do not buy every implant you can afford; buy the ones that support the character you are actually playing.

Visit a ripperdoc early, even if you only install one implant. The tutorialisation is worth it, and the capacity system only makes sense once you see it.

When to start Phantom Liberty

Phantom Liberty unlocks partway through the main story, after a specific main-job chain. Starting it too early is not fatal, but it interrupts the pacing of the base game and introduces characters and stakes that assume you have met the main cast. A common approach is to play through the main story until the expansion's invitation arrives, then decide whether to continue or detour.

The expansion is not required to finish the base game. It is required if you want its additional ending path, its district and its own questline.

Money, crafting and the early economy

Early on, sell junk and duplicate weapons rather than hoarding them. Upgrade your favourite weapon instead of buying a new one every level. Crafting components are worth picking up, and access to a stash makes the inventory manageable.

Do not spend heavily on vehicles in the first act. Fast travel and the main quest routes will carry you, and the cars are a luxury rather than a progression requirement.

A spoiler-light route through the first act

  1. Finish the opening mission and meet your first fixer.
  2. Choose two attributes and start spending perks in one tree.
  3. Visit a ripperdoc and install one implant you understand.
  4. Do a few gigs to build cash and familiarity with the district.
  5. Follow the main story until the expansion invitation appears.
  6. Then choose: continue the base story or step into Dogtown.

What to check before modding

The Edgerunners 2 update changed the game again, and mods are version-specific. Back up a save, check that every mod lists the current version, and remove anything that has not been updated. A broken mod list is the most common reason a returning player's game will not launch.

Night City rewards a character built with intent. Decide who you are, spend accordingly, and let the story meet you there.
