Black Ops 7 after the final season: what is actually in the game

Six seasons, six Zombies maps and a co-op campaign that divided players. A clear-eyed look at what Black Ops 7 is now that content has stopped.

Black Ops 7 is finished, in the content sense. Treyarch's six-season plan concluded on 17 September 2026, and the game now exists as a fixed package: a co-op campaign, a multiplayer suite, Zombies and the Endgame mode. That makes it a useful moment to ask what the game actually is, rather than what the roadmap promised.

The campaign is a co-op game first

Set in 2035, the campaign follows David Mason and a JSOC unit investigating the apparent return of Raul Menendez in the Mediterranean city of Avalon. It supports up to four players and 11 missions, and completing it unlocks Endgame, a 32-player mode built around objectives, extraction and gear loss.

The co-op focus is the source of the campaign's mixed reception. Reviewers found the multiplayer structure ambitious but uneven, and solo players encountered missing AI companions, no mid-mission checkpoints and no pause. IGN's campaign review scored it 6/10; Eurogamer's 3/5 called co-op the optimal way to play. The campaign is not a traditional Black Ops story, and it is not designed to be played alone.

Multiplayer is the strongest part

The multiplayer suite kept Black Ops 6's omnidirectional movement and added wall jumps, which gives maps more vertical routes. The standard mode is 6v6, with Team Deathmatch, Domination, Hardpoint and Overload, plus the 20v20 Skirmish. Reviews were generally positive: GameSpot scored the game 7/10 and praised the map selection, while The Guardian's 4/5 found plenty to enjoy.

The matchmaking story is worth remembering. After the beta's "Open Moshpit" playlist reduced skill-based matchmaking and drew a positive response, Activision made a looser system the default, then revised it again after the Black Ops and Black Ops II re-releases. The final system is inspired by those older games, with team balancing and mixed-level parties in mind. It is a rare case of a publisher changing matchmaking in public.

Zombies: six maps and three new modes

Zombies launched with the Dark Aether storyline continuing from Black Ops 6, and grew to six maps across the seasons. The mode includes the standard round-based experience, Directed mode for players who want help with the main quest, and three additions: Survival, Dead Ops Arcade 4 and Cursed. Survival shrinks the core maps into tighter holdout spaces; Dead Ops Arcade 4 is the top-down arcade mode; Cursed adds Relics and legacy elements for players who want a harder version.

Critics were mostly positive. The launch map, Ashes of the Damned, drew praise for its scale and Dark Aether atmosphere, and Vandorn Farm was singled out as a good shorter alternative. IGN was less convinced, describing Zombies as "a shambling corpse that reminds us of the person it used to be". The split is a fair summary of the mode's reputation: generous in content, divisive in execution.

Endgame is the experiment

Endgame puts up to 32 players in Avalon with a strict time limit and a series of objectives. You bring a custom loadout, choose major and minor abilities, and lose your gear if you die. A skill tree progresses during the match and can persist through successful extraction.

It is the most ambitious thing in the package and the least proven. The mode borrows from extraction shooters without becoming one, and its population depends on a community that has already moved through six seasons. If you are arriving now, expect to find the dedicated players and not a mass queue.

What the final season means

The final season is not a shutdown. The game is still playable, the servers are still running, and the content that shipped is still there. What ends is the cadence of new maps, weapons and modes. For a player deciding whether to start, that is actually useful: the package is complete, and no future update will invalidate the guide you read today.

It also means the modding question matters more. With official content finished, community-made maps would extend the game's life, which is exactly why the unverified claims are so appealing. As our modding explainer sets out, no official tools have been announced.

Should you play it now?

If you want a co-op campaign with friends, a fast multiplayer suite or a large Zombies package, Black Ops 7 has all three, and the price is likely to be more reasonable than it was at launch. If you want a single-player Black Ops campaign, this is not that game. If you want custom Zombies, the supported route is still Black Ops 3.

The honest summary is a game with a strong multiplayer core, a generous but uneven Zombies mode and a campaign that only makes sense with other people. Six seasons later, that has not changed.
