Modern Warfare 4 Season 1 multiplayer: what is at launch and what waits
Backstab, Canyon and a reworked Shoot House arrive on 6 November. Grind and Drop Zone join them, with Ministry, Overflow and Counter Attack later in the season.
Modern Warfare 4's first season is a split release. Activision's 28 October announcement puts three maps and two modes on 6 November, then holds two maps and a third mode for the middle of the season. The distinction matters if you are deciding whether the season pass is worth buying on day one.
Launch maps
Backstab and Canyon are new, and Shoot House returns in a reworked form. Shoot House is the known quantity: a small, fast three-lane map that has been a fixture of recent Call of Duty titles. Backstab and Canyon are the unknowns, and Activision has not published full layout details in the announcement.
The reworked Shoot House is worth watching closely. A remake can change sightlines, spawn logic and cover in ways that alter the map's pace. If you liked the original, treat the new version as a different map until you have played it.
Launch modes
Grind asks teams to collect opponents' dog tags and bank them. It is a objective mode with a risk-reward loop: carrying tags makes you a target, and banking them converts the risk into score.
Drop Zone revolves around a moving objective and killstreak-package drops. The mode rewards map control and timing rather than pure slaying, because the objective moves and the packages give both teams a reason to contest the same space.
Mid-season additions
Ministry and Overflow are scheduled for mid-season. Counter Attack is the third mode: teams attack an enemy communications station while protecting their own. That is a two-objective structure, and it will live or die on how clearly the game communicates which station needs defending.
None of these are day-one content. If you are planning a launch session, plan it around Backstab, Canyon, Shoot House, Grind and Drop Zone.
Weapons and the Battle Pass
The announcement lists the Cronen Osprey assault rifle and the CSG-35 SMG in the Battle Pass. Free gameplay additions and paid cosmetic rewards are different entitlements, so check the in-game reward track before buying a pass for a specific weapon.
DMZ also gets a new destination, X01, a weapons facility with tunnels, changing hazards and extraction routes that can close during a run. That is a meaningful change for extraction players: a route you used on the way in may not be available on the way out, so the mode asks you to plan an exit rather than simply fight toward one.
Warzone and the wider rollout
Warzone is adding Hajin and Zodiac, with a separate roadmap still to come. Activision has not supplied download sizes or an Australian rollout time in this announcement, so treat the 6 November date as the season start rather than a guaranteed local unlock time.
What to check before buying
- Which maps and modes are launch content, and which are mid-season.
- Whether the weapon you want is on the free track or the paid track.
- Whether you play DMZ, multiplayer or Warzone, because the season's value is different in each.
- Local store pricing and platform entitlements, which are not part of the announcement.
Season 1 is a substantial update, but it is not all available on the first day. The honest summary is three maps and two modes at launch, with the rest arriving later in the season.
