MW4 DMZ: loadouts, attachments and practical build advice

How DMZ weapon building differs from multiplayer, what is verified about slots and costs, and a clearly labelled set of editorial build recommendations dated 30 October 2026.

DMZ weapon building is a shop, not a menu. In multiplayer you unlock an attachment and attach it. In DMZ you unlock the attachment through weapon levelling, then pay DMZ Cash to buy the slot and the attachment, then carry the resulting weapon into a deployment where it can be lost. The system is deliberately more expensive, because a built weapon is part of the run's risk.

This guide separates two things: the verified mechanics below, and the build recommendations further down, which are editorial suggestions dated 30 October 2026. No attachment, recoil value or time-to-kill figure here has been tested by GameOnCue.

Verified facts about DMZ weapons

  • The Gunsmith unlocks at DMZ level 10.
  • There are 32 launch weapons: eight assault rifles, five SMGs, two shotguns, three LMGs, three marksman rifles, three sniper rifles, four pistols and four launchers.
  • Launchers do not use attachments or Apex attachments. They are utility, not build projects.
  • When you build a weapon at the Gunsmith you can fit up to five attachments.
  • Weapons found in the field can carry up to eight attachments.
  • A base M4 costs around 5,000 DMZ Cash at the Gunsmith.
  • Extracting with a weapon does not unlock it for purchase. You must extract with its Weapon Manual, which is consumed at exfil, unlocks the weapon in the Gunsmith and costs 5,000 DMZ Cash.
  • If you lose an extracted weapon you never unlocked, the weapon type stays locked.

Those facts come from Activision's FOB deep dive. Anything about recoil, damage ranges or optimal builds beyond them is opinion.

What an attachment slot actually costs

Every attachment is two purchases: the slot and the attachment. That is why a fully built weapon is expensive, and why a failed exfil hurts twice. Treat a built weapon as capital you are risking, not as a default loadout.

Practical consequence: build weapons for a purpose, not for completeness. A five-attachment rifle you lose on your second deployment is worse value than a two-attachment rifle you extract with three times.

Editorial build archetypes (opinion, dated 30 October 2026)

These are starting points, not tested meta. Adjust to your play and to whatever the current patch changes. GameOnCue has not measured any of them.

1. Quiet mid-range (generalist)

Aim: stay undetected, win fights at 20 to 60 metres, leave quickly. Prioritise a suppressor, a mid-power optic, a barrel that steadies recoil, a stock that keeps aim-down-sight speed reasonable, and a magazine you can afford to lose. Skip the laser if you play in daylight; add it if you play at night or in tunnels.

2. Close-quarters (building and tunnel work)

Aim: win the first two seconds of a fight indoors. Prioritise hip-fire stability, a short barrel, a fast-handling stock and a magazine size you can empty without reloading mid-fight. Optic is optional; many players run iron sights here. This build is weak past 30 metres and should not be your only weapon.

3. Long-range marksman (overwatch and extraction denial)

Aim: punish players crossing open ground and protect a squad extracting. Prioritise a high-magnification optic, a barrel that extends effective range, a muzzle that reduces report, and a rear grip that steadies sway. Carry a sidearm for the close fight you will eventually lose if you do not.

4. Budget starter (first ten deployments)

Aim: learn the map without risking capital. Run the free loadout plus one cheap, two-attachment weapon from the Vendor. Spend nothing on a fifth attachment until you can extract consistently. Upgrade to a full build only after your first three successful exfils.

Attachments worth understanding before spending

The categories you will choose between, in the order most players feel them:

  • Muzzle: suppressors trade damage and range for stealth. In DMZ, stealth is worth more than in multiplayer because a gunshot calls other players and AI.
  • Barrel: the single biggest change to how a gun behaves at range.
  • Optic: match it to the distance you actually fight. Over-scoping is the most common waste of a slot.
  • Stock: recoil versus handling. Pick one based on whether you miss because the gun kicks or because you are too slow.
  • Underbarrel: bipods and grips matter more on LMGs and marksman rifles than on SMGs.
  • Magazine: bigger is not always better; reload time and movement speed change.
  • Rear grip: small, cheap, often the best value slot.
  • Laser: situational. Strong in tunnels and at night, a liability in open daylight.

Version-dated meta note

Editorial opinion, not tested data.

As of 30 October 2026, DMZ has not had a published balance patch beyond launch information. Treat any "meta" list circulating online as opinion until Activision publishes patch notes. When Season 1 arrives on 6 November, re-check every recommendation here; new weapons such as the Cronen Osprey and CSG-35 may change the picture.
