MW4 multiplayer's first tuning patch: movement nerf, playlist changes and what not to assume
Infinity Ward's October 28 launch notes confirm a 23% dive velocity reduction and multiplayer weapon tuning. Here's what players should check before copying an old meta build.

Don't treat a launch-week loadout video as a permanent MW4 meta. Infinity Ward's 28 October update introduced the first Multiplayer weapon-tuning pass, reduced a movement exploit and repaired challenges, killstreaks and UI behaviour. The developer has separate balance tuning for Multiplayer and DMZ, so weapon numbers from one mode do not automatically carry over to the other.
At a glance: the confirmed movement change
Infinity Ward temporarily reduced the velocity of the dive by 23% to mitigate a speed boost achieved by diving immediately after a sprint jump. The developer says this is a short-term mitigation while it works toward a permanent fix that won't need the same dive-velocity compromise.
| Area | Confirmed update | Practical consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Movement | 23% reduction to dive velocity as a temporary exploit mitigation | Relearn the timing and spacing of sprint-jump-dive movement |
| Multiplayer weapons | First tuning pass; consult detailed live weapon entries in the official notes | Don't assume pre-patch recoil/TTK advice is still correct |
| Camos and progression | Multiple challenge counters and Prestige loadout UI fixes | Retest challenges that appeared stuck rather than discarding progress assumptions |
| Free for All | Score limit restored to 30, with final killcam planned for a later backend update | Match flow and endgame presentation may differ from launch-day videos |
| Search and Destroy / Collateral | XP per kill raised from 100 to 300 in the 25 October update | Re-evaluate ranking efficiency without claiming these are the fastest modes |
How to tell whether a build video is current
- Find the creator's publication date and the exact MW4 patch or Season it uses.
- Check the named weapon, attachments and mode, including whether the test was done in MP or DMZ.
- Verify the claim against the latest official patch notes; watch for a balance change after the video was posted.
- Separate what was actually measured (test distance, shots to kill, recoil pattern) from subjective “best gun” rankings.
- Test the build in the Firing Range and then in a live match before spending rare resources or assuming it dominates every map.
The current playlist context
Shipment 24/7 arrived in the late-October preseason. Kill Block: 6v6 Gunfight, Gun Game and the Halloween-themed Possession mode are part of the changing playlist mix. Some modes have unique scoring or party limits, so check the playlist menu when queuing; published screenshots may be outdated within days.
What arrives November 6?
Season 1 adds new Multiplayer maps including Backstab and Canyon, a remade Shoot House, modes including Grind and Drop Zone, and weapons such as the Cronen Osprey assault rifle and CSG-35 SMG. Other content is scheduled for mid-season. Our Season 1 maps and modes breakdown separates the launch line-up from later additions.
Important DMZ warning
The 28 October DMZ note also changed the Possum Trait: it cannot be activated while the eliminating team is nearby or before four minutes have passed. That is not a Multiplayer Perk nerf. For DMZ-specific patch impacts and cash rewards, read our 29 October DMZ economy guide and use the Hājīn tactical map.
