Dune: Awakening heads into the snow on 1 December — Blood and Ice explained
Funcom confirms a free Polar Sink survival map, cold-weather progression, new resources and December plans. Offline play, character transfers and cross-play have different timelines.

Confirmed for Tuesday 1 December 2026: Funcom is taking Dune: Awakening from Arrakis' familiar desert to its frozen north. Blood and Ice is a free expansion for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox players, introducing the Polar Sink as a separate survival map rather than merely covering existing sand dunes in snow. Funcom announced the update on 29 October. The exact Australian server unlock hour has not been announced; a listed date is not the same thing as a 12:00 am AEST release.
At a glance: Two new environments · Gear and resources · Offline, transfers and cross-play dates · What remains unknown.
Polar Sink: a survival map built around cold
The Polar Sink contains tundra and ice cap regions. Funcom says players begin in the comparatively manageable tundra, where wealthy water-shipping families defend their strongholds. Reaching the heavily guarded ice cap and its resources becomes a significant progression goal. This is not a publisher-confirmed safe route, raid map or list of enemy spawns.
Survival priorities reverse. Hot desert travel previously taught players to find shade and conserve water; the new region asks them to stay warm and upgrade equipment that was built for heat. Funcom describes a greater emphasis on ground travel, temperature management and combat. New materials found only within the Polar Sink support equipment progression; gathering ice at the ice cap can cool production equipment back at base.
What the free expansion includes
| Feature | Confirmed detail | Still unknown |
|---|---|---|
| New map | Polar Sink with tundra and ice-cap biomes | Exact playable boundaries and POI positions |
| Progression | Approximately 35 hours of added progression estimated by the developer | Individual completion times; not a measured GameOnCue playthrough |
| Crafting and base | Region-exclusive resources, survival equipment and useful harvested ice | Full recipes, drop chances or farming rates |
| Build variety | New vehicle modules, augments and specialization traits | Complete balancing and best-in-slot combinations |
| Live events | New Events tab, Water Crisis after The Scourge, and free event rewards | Exact local start hour and individual reward quantities |
These are developer descriptions of upcoming content. They are not independently benchmarked performance results, loot rates or post-launch reviews. An earlier concept image of the snowy Polar Cap illustrates the theme; it is not claimed to be new, final in-game footage of the 1 December build.
Three other features — three different schedules
The free expansion is only one piece of Funcom's announcement. Its roadmap makes clear that some of the biggest quality-of-life requests are not all coming on 1 December:
- November 2026: offline single-player support is planned. No specific November day was published in the announcement.
- January 2027: planned character copying from multiplayer to single-player, and from single-player to eligible private or self-hosted servers on PC, subject to the destination server permitting it.
- January 2027: full cross-play across supported platforms is planned. That is not the same as saying it is available today.
Funcom also plans a rotating optional-cosmetics store to help support ongoing free development. Cosmetic purchases are separate from the free Blood and Ice map; the developer has not stated that purchasing cosmetics is required to enter the new region.
How to get ready without wasting resources
- Finish your existing priorities: keep enough materials for current builds; there is no official list of Polar Sink recipes yet, so don't hoard alleged mandatory items from unsourced videos.
- Expect cold-weather changes: avoid assuming desert armour and transport choices are effective on the new map. Consult the final patch notes when available.
- Plan with friends: review cross-play and private-server promises separately from existing modes. Full cross-play is listed for January, not for the December expansion launch.
- Watch the release page: regional rollout, download size, event schedules and future balance changes require a fresh official check on or near 1 December.
What GameOnCue will not pretend to know
Funcom has not supplied a verified complete Polar Sink map, exact enemy/loot coordinates, best farming path, Australian midnight unlock or objectively measured 35-hour completion time. The “more than one million new players since console launch” statistic is the developer's own claim; it is not a count of people currently online or a third-party audit of active accounts.
