Warframe: Tau arrives in December — Fornax, Perita, Brysko and Portau explained
Digital Extremes has detailed Tau's new Star Chart, noir-tinged ring city, desert moon, new Warframe and its in-world card game. Here is what is confirmed — and what is still waiting for a date.

Warframe is leaving the Origin System behind — but it is not abandoning it. Digital Extremes has confirmed that Warframe: Tau reaches all supported platforms in December 2026. The free expansion opens an entirely new Star Chart around a binary star system. As of this check, the developer's public announcement gives a month, not an exact December release day or Australian unlock hour.
The new chapter starts with two contrasting places: the corrupt Sentient orbital city of Fornax and the dangerous wastelands of Perita. The bigger idea is an ongoing second Star Chart, expanded over time, rather than one map that exhausts every possible destination at launch. The developer says work in the Origin System will continue as well.
The confirmed additions at a glance
| Feature | What Digital Extremes has shown | What it does not confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Release window | December 2026, all supported platforms | A specific day or hour |
| Fornax | Orbital ring city with Sentient criminal factions, docks, slums, a casino and black rain | A completed map of every interior or reward |
| Perita | Collapsed ecosystem and hostile desert clans in a separate destination | Every mission or resource rate |
| New Warframe: Brysko | Detective-noir style, a Hound Companion and card-themed abilities | Final build rankings or damage numbers |
| Portau | An original in-world card game with Blooms, Cores, Moons and Suns suits | A verified best strategy or wagering economy |
| More Tau content | Future additions to this Star Chart | Fixed dates for subsequent worlds |
Fornax: a Sentient city rather than another open wilderness
The studio's description of Fornax is unusually specific. It is a decayed ring city built around a violent criminal economy; the dangerous Fornax Drowners are a new Sentient enemy faction. Its ruler, the Hunra, controls operations through intimidation and a substance called Bloom. The persistent black rain is more than background dressing in the official story description, but the exact gameplay systems tied to each weather event are not yet fully specified.
The casino also matters. Portau is described as Warframe's first original card game, and Digital Extremes identifies four suits: Blooms, Cores, Moons and Suns. That's a confirmed activity, not proof that every fan-made card list or tier guide circulating before launch is correct.
Perita: a different kind of destination
Perita's ruined environment is the other side of the expansion. The developer says a once-flourishing ecosystem has collapsed into sandstorms and conflict among Dazannah clans. A young character named Catulast asks the Tenno for help. The contrast between neon-lit urban crime and windswept survival makes Tau more interesting than a simple visual reskin of familiar nodes.
Brysko and the new build questions
Brysko is the detective-inspired Warframe at the centre of the reveal. Its showcased tools include explosive Portau cards, a Hound Companion, survival mechanics and an exalted shooting attack called Corecracker. Digital Extremes also mentions a new premium customisation category, the Chimera Skin. None of this should be mistaken for a completed hands-on weapons guide: mod interactions, acquisition routes and balance will need checking against the actual playable update.
The physical Portau cards are a separate preorder
Digital Extremes has also revealed a real-world Portau Card Box Set and Portau Playmat. The physical decks, bag charm and mat are collectible merchandise — not a purchase required to access the card game inside the free Tau expansion. For the confirmed USD prices, shipping expectations and Australian ordering checks, see our Portau collector's guide.
What to do before December
- Finish event rewards you care about: the one-time Epoch Operation: Taubound ends on 17 November 2026. It is separate from the permanent expansion.
- Don't panic about the new Star Chart: the studio has not said the existing Origin System or its quests are disappearing.
- Watch the official reveal rather than unverified leaks: Digital Extremes has released real screenshots and video, including material on its Tau page.
- Keep character preparation practical: sort inventory, check your existing quests and leave space for new rewards. Don't spend scarce resources based on pre-launch meta charts.
Our separate Taubound Moonflesh and reward guide covers the limited-time event, and the Nidus/Saryn Prime Resurgence guide covers another current activity. They're not substitutes for Tau's December launch details.
